Walking Your Blues Away: How to Heal the Mind and Create Emotional Well-Being Kindle Edition PDF

Walking Your Blues Away: How to Heal the Mind and Create Emotional Well-Being Kindle Edition

File Size: 285 KBPrint Length: 112 pagesPublisher: Park Street Press (October 19, 2006)Publication Date: August 12, 2010 Sold by:  Digital Services, Inc. Don’t let the lightweight title, cover, and page-count fool you. This is a breakthrough book, and not just another self-help, happy-talk rip-off. This book can stand proudly next to the most academic psychological tome, and replace much of the pop psychology pap moldering on our bookshelves.

To be open to something so important, one first has to know who the author is, what he stands for, and why he can be trusted. I’ve read several of Thom Hartmann’s books, and listened to his daily progressive radio program numerous times. I can only state emphatically: This is a gifted man we can trust. He is the real deal. (See my earlier post on him for more info.)

The basics of the book are these:

1. Our bodies are self-healing if we feed it the right food and exercise it properly under the right conditions. Shouldn’t our minds and emotions also be self-healing?

2. Rhythmic, bilateral movement is the way we’ve healed ourselves from traumatic, psychological wounds for hundreds of thousands of years. But until now, we didn’t know how it worked.

3. "Bilaterality is the ability to have the right and left hemispheres of the brain fully functional and communicating with each other."

4. Freud’s early, very successful work was based on Bilaterality techniques, but after some unfortunate, sensationalistic historical events, he was forced to abandon it for mostly unsuccessful "talk-therapy" methods. Freud tried, but failed, for years to find an equally-successful technique. This history is crucial to our understanding of why psychotherapy evolved the way it did.

5. Devastating events can haunt our every waking moment for years.
When a self-improvement book is reviewed I always look for actual experience from people who have tried the methods in the book – not just those read it and agree with it. Well now I am reviewing ‘Walk Your Blue’s Away’ and I can say unequivocally IT WORKS, at least for me. All of my adult life I have been prone to depressive episodes from rejection and loss – even if the loss is very small. Recently a loving and satisfying relationship of 5 years was broken off by my partner. I knew from experience I was poised to nosedive into depression. This was despite many years of zealous embrace of cognitive behavior therapy in which the two sides of the brain battle. An adverse event triggers dejection, anger, depression. With cognitive therapy you have to identify the irrational thought that supposedly triggers your negative emotions, dispute the thought, and find a rational and sensible substitute thought. The problem was the negative emotions would take sometimes years to dissipate and I was constantly ruminating and flashing back to previous events. What Thom’s book does is address healing. When you heal from emotional trauma with this method, the two sides of the brain actually are successful in integrating reason and emotion. With cognitive therapy reason and emotion seemed to constantly battle one another without resolution. You might win a battle but the next day another begins. I contend that after 5 daily walks following the simple guidelines of the book, the crushing sadness of rejection has lifted. The memories that previously would trigger bouts of depression are still there but now in the distance. They no longer dominate my mood allowing me to concentrate and get on with my life.
"Just as a person with a severe hemispheric imbalance can be badly disconnected from emotions such as empathy, and thus sanction or even encourage actions such as mass murder that is war, so too can an entire society. In the opinion of some researchers, societies that are hemispherically unbalanced are more likely to be patriarchal, hierarchal, and violent, whereas societies that are hemispherically balanced are more likely to be egalitarian and democratic, and employ violence only in self-defense." – From the book

Remember the caricatures of stage hypnotists brandishing a swinging pocket watch while intoning "Look into my eyes…" ? Well, according to author Thom Hartmann, this type of hypnosis was actually a bona fide psychiatric therapy in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. In fact, Franz Anton Mesmer ("mesmerize") was the first person to develop a system of bilateral cross-hemispheric stimulation by waving his fingers side to side while a patient followed with their eyes. Mesmer discovered that his system was quite effective in resolving non-organic physical and psychological problems. That is, psychosomatic conditions or issues rooted in emotional trauma.

In the late 1800’s, Sigmund Freud–a protégé of Josef Breuer–discovered the power of bilateral therapy in the form of alternatively stroking both sides of the body, a technique that Mesmer first developed. In fact, in the 1880’s and early 1890’s, Freud’s preferred method of treatment wasn’t talk therapy (which is what he became famous for) but a bilateral technique known as hypnosis.

In Walking Your Blues Away, author Thom Hartmann traces Freud’s sudden discontinuance of hypnosis to the popularity of the book Trilby, authored by George Du Maurier in 1894.

Think and Grow Rich – March 6, 2014

Think and Grow Rich Paperback – March 6, 2014
Author: Visit ‘s Napoleon Hill Page ID: 149617545X

Review

Think and Grow Rich is the best motivational literature that I ve come across. I was involved in a certain marketing stint during my engineering, and this book was suggested to me by a friend, who is today one of the finest motivational speakers. The book presents the essential commodities for success, in the simplest terms possible. The book is build with research conducted by Napoleon Hill for over 25 years, interviewing successful people like Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell to name a few. –Santosh J K on 03 Mar 2013

The story goes like that, i was once wondering in the street mhatama gandhi road or like that which connects ahmedabad railway station to Bhdra kali temple in 1982. In between the road there was one bridge below which one second hand book seller was sitting with a pile of old books with rate as rs two each book. I bought ten books and one of them was this think & Grow rich. since i was engineering student at that time therefore i replced word money with knowledge. This worked well and still i remember the book which has astonishing effects and rejuvenate your action in desired directions to acheive any goal properly thought and decided by you –HARISH KUMAR..on . 03 Sep 2012

This is a very good inspirational book. This edition contains commentary adding more examples of today. It will definitely change the way you think. I firmly believe that the methods described in the book can make anybody who follows them extremely successful. A must read for anybody who wants to be successful. I have just finished reading it, and I am going to go over it again. This is not a "get rich quick" book. –sapan maniyar on 12 Mar 2012

Language Notes

Be prepared, therefore, when you expose yourself to the influence of this philosophy, to experience a changed life which may help you not only to negotiate your way through life with harmony and understanding, but also to prepare you for the accumulation of material riches in abundance. Teaching, for the first time, the famous Carnegie formula for money-making, based upon the thirteen proven steps to riches.

Napoleon Hill’s works examined the power of personal beliefs, and the role they play in personal success. “What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve” is one of Hill’s hallmark expressions. How achievement actually occurs, and a formula for it that puts success in reach for the average person, were the promise of Hill’s books.

If you asked me to recommend to you the single best "success" book I have ever read, my answer would be a very definite "Think and Grow Rich".
First published in 1937, this is the end product of two decades of research conducted by Napoleon Hill. His research started when Andrew Carnegie (the steel tycoon who was then the richest man on earth) gave him the assignment of organizing a Philosophy of Personal Achievement. Hill, who was a poor journalist, armed with just an introductory letter from Carnegie, set out to interview over five hundred successful people including Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, John D. Rockefeller, George Eastman, William Wrigley Jr. and Charles M. Schwab. Hill then revealed the priceless wisdom of his research in the form of the thirteen steps to success (in Think and Grow Rich) and the seventeen principles of success (in courses and lectures he conducted).
The concepts taught by Napoleon Hill transformed my life. Some of these include developing a definite purpose, building a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA), channeling the power of the sub-conscious mind and dealing with adversity. Everything he wrote about or talked about is thought provoking. He was wise, humble and funny. His philosophy is universal; he did not mix it with religion. The riches he referred to were more than money, for the Philosophy of Personal Achievement can be applied to anything in life.
Hill was well ahead of his time. This book has a chapter dedicated to some of today’s most important issues – Specialized Knowledge, Decision Making, Imagination and Organized Planning (in which he deals with Leadership). He also has principles for Teamwork, Creative Vision, Health, etc.
Do not buy this version. I purchased this version and discovered the original 1937 edition free online so I decided to compare. I discovered after comparing the first few pages of the original online version to this version that quite a few critical points had been omitted from the book. I became curious, so I went through every word of the online version and compared it with the book and was astonished at the amount of important information that was excluded from the book. Almost all of the key elements of the book had been removed or worse (reworded and changed) this completely diluted the message. I can see why many readers could find the book to be a little vague and unclear. I decided to write down the numerous words and paragraphs that had been removed from this edition and put them together. Wow! Just reading what was removed was profound and told a story in and of itself and made me question why this critical information was removed. It should be a crime to remove so much original content. Something that was clear, concise and cohesive had now become distorted and muddled. Clearly the original content could stir the masses for change not just for money but politically and socially which Napoleon states. The thought police have been more active than I thought wink wink. Here is a small list of omitted subjects that you are missing if you purchase this version:

Christianity – and it is not what you would expect

Copernicus

Lincoln slavery and a united North & South

Philipine representative that excited his people to freedom

Earth – high vibrational frequency (correlates a lot with the quantum physics of today)

School and education – most of what is taught in school does not help a person succeed in life.

I would like to first of all explain I am not a doctor, nurse or nutritionist. The only letters associated with my name are Mrs. I?ve been married to a wonderful man for the past 32 years and he was diagnosed with cancer five months ago. Not just in the colon, as we were originally told, but surgery found it in his liver, spleen, stomach, upper and lower intestines. The surgeon told us that there was too much cancer and he didn?t want to start ?cutting him up?. I was not going to sit back and just let him be taken by cancer. I purchased ?Beating Cancer with Nutrition? by Patrick Quillin, PHD, RD, CNS after reading a pamphlet, written by him, that I picked up at the local supermarket. I immediately started my husband on supplements that were recommended for the various symptoms he had. Our oncologist told us the liver is the best measure of the amount of cancer and that the tumors in the liver shrink in direct proportion to the amount of cancer in the rest of the body. The tumor on his liver was 13cm by 10cm at the time of the first CAT scan. His second CAT scan, four months later, shows it is now 9cm by 7cm. Yes, my husband is getting chemotherapy in addition to the healthy eating and supplements. He has gained back 20 of the 50 pounds he lost and is in better health than he has been in years. His tumor markers have dropped from 75.8 to 20.5 in 2 months. I have no reason to believe that he won?t be free of cancer.
I have read this book from cover to cover and have seen what putting Dr Quillin?s advice into use can do. If you, anyone you love, care about or know are faced with cancer, you owe it to yourself and to them to read this book, put his words to the test. It?s not hard to understand. I have only a high school diploma and a strong desire to bring my husband back to health. All you need is a desire to beat cancer and as Dr Quillin says ?Hope, Optimism and a Fighting Spirit?.

My husband bought an earlier version of this book almost 7 years ago when I was given 8 weeks to live. The uterine cancer had metasticized to my lungs and bones. I had a large tumor on my pelvic bone which caused excruciating pain when I walked and even at rest. We followed the book exactly and yes, we bought the Immunopower which was very expensive, but you can’t put a price on your life. The only thing I did differently was avoid all meat entirely. I still do not eat meat. My oncologist calls me his "miracle" patient. I’ve been cancer free for 7 years even though my oncologist said I had a very "aggressive" cancer and it definitely would return. Organic veggies, a juicer, Essiac tea, Immunopower and lots of prayer saved my life.

Beating cancer with nutrition is giving the reader all the background information about cancer and how to best fight it. In addition, Dr. Quillin outlines his approach for nutritional therapy. The reader can choose to buy the supplements seperately or can buy Immunopower, a combination of powder (for shakes) and pills. Yes, Immunopower has been developed by Dr. Quillin and is quiet expensive. But buying seperately (and I have tried to do this) is even more expensive. Unfortunately, cancer is not an easy or cheap disease to fight. Dr. Quillin talks a lot about Immunopower in his book, but only because it truly is the best thing out there to fight cancer.
I was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer in Sept. 2002. At the time, I only underwent chemo without any additional nutrition therapy. My cancer metastasized and by January of 2004 I was back in chemo. This time, I had met some increadible cancer patients who had battled cancer with the help of Immunopower. I started to take the supplements myself right away. My tumor has since dissapeared!! My doctor called it highly unusual. I am 38 years old, mother of a 5 and a 9 year old boy. My doctor initially felt, that I might at most have 2 years more to live. He is now more confident than even I am, that I will live to see my own grandchildren. My husband is now taking ImmunopwerEZ, just as an insurance.
Health, unfortunately, is not cheap, but rather worth every last penny.

Brainwashed

Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority Paperback – February 1, 2010
Author: Visit ‘s Tom Burrell Page ID: 1401925928

About the Author

Marketing communications pioneer and Advertising Hall of Fameinductee Tom Burrell is credited with revolutionizing the image of African Americans in television and changing the face of American advertising. His award-winning work promoted positive and realistic images of blacks and acknowledged the purchIDg power of the African American community. Burrell is the founder of The Resolution Project, a nonprofit organization that promotes intra-racial dialogue and community-based new media “stop the brainwash” campaigns. He lives in Chicago’s South Loop area.

Paperback: 320 pagesPublisher: SmileyBooks; 1 edition (February 1, 2010)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1401925928ISBN-13: 978-1401925925 Product Dimensions: 9 x 6 x 0.8 inches Shipping Weight: 12.8 ounces (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #22,301 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #41 in Books > History > Americas > United States > African Americans > Discrimination & Racism #52 in Books > Politics & Social Sciences > Sociology > Race Relations #105 in Books > Politics & Social Sciences > Social Sciences > Specific Demographics > African-American Studies

After reading Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority, I have but one regret; It has challenged my role as a passive observer. It’s now hard to laugh at black comedians and rappers who carelessly use the N-word or endorse sexual promiscuity and violence. I can no longer dismiss the impact of black films or TV shows that exaggerate black pathologies and buffoonery. With disturbing clarity, the author draws connections between what’s deemed "black entertainment" today and what was yesteryear’s promotion of vile, demeaning, violent and debased black stereotypes. From "Relationship Wrecks" to "Neo-Coons" and every chapter in between, Burrell details a masterful 18th Century propaganda campaign that has effectively imbedded the notion of black inferiority and white superiority in society. With concentrated focus, the author shows how blacks, as well as whites, have been unconsciously conditioned to expect black inadequacies. Not satisfied with simply identifying this insidious campaign, the author, a former advertising executive, compassionately details a "New Media" strategy aimed at reclaiming black minds and communities. There have been many authors (Norman Coombs, E. Franklin Frazier, bell hooks) who have explored the psychological damage wrought by slavery and oppression. Burrell’s approach from an advertising/marketing perspective, however, offers valuable perspective in an increIDgly media-driven and dominated society.

Once I began to read Brainwashed by Tom Burrell it was difficult to put down. His explanation of how the purposeful destruction of slave families 150+ years ago has evolved into a self-perpetuating cycle that, if left unchecked, insures continued enslavement for years to come, is powerful. Burrell convincingly rebuts arguments that say the Black family was restored during reconstruction and that its decay is of more recent origin. Brainwashed invites the reader to check your guilt, leave your defenses at the door, and allow yourself to consider that we can all make choices to both be free and set each others free. As a professor of multicultural counseling at a Midwestern university, I added the book to my recommended reading list before I was halfway through reading it. I have also ordered a copy for the school library. This is a must read for those who long for a truly "post-racial" America.

I have purchased multiple copies of Brainwashed to share with my family and friends, and I intend to buy many more. This is a must-read book for Black people–and everybody else. There is a growing grassroots movement for emotional healing and renewal for Black people in this country and around the world. As part of the Community Healing Network, a group working for emotional freedom for Black people, I can report that Brainwashed is already at the top of our list of recommended readings. It is an important addition to the body of work describing the historical roots of so much of the pain we see and feel in Black communities today. Touching on nearly every area of Black life–from our physical and mental health to the health of our interpersonal, family, and community relationships, and more–Burrell shows how each has been undermined by the myth of Black inferiority. Along the way, he shares insights that can help us help ourselves. Brainwashed shows how the myth of Black inferiority has been skillfully marketed throughout American history and proposes a bold and creative campaign of reverse marketing to help change how we see ourselves and how the world sees us. What makes this book so important, from my point of view, is Burrell’s focus on action through his Resolution Project, which is designed to use the media to replace the toxic messages that are part and parcel of the myth with new and positive images of Black people. Tom Burrell has made an indispensable contribution with the gift of an excellent resource for movement-building–and with his commitment, as a marketing expert, to use marketing to change the image of Black people.

Red Queen February 10 2015

Red Queen Hardcover – February 10, 2015
Author: Visit ‘s Victoria Aveyard Page ID: 0062310631

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Seventeen-year-old Mare Barrow lives in a world where one’s lot in life is determined by the color of one’s blood. She was born a Red and has to make a living by pickpocketing and trying to dodge “the conscription” and being sent off to fight an ongoing war. Mare’s resigned herself to the fact that she’ll always serve the Silver, a genetically gifted group of people with supernatural abilities. A chance encounter with the prince causes Mare to suddenly find herself at the royal palace as a servant, where she discovers in front of everyone that she also has a unique gift. She is Red and Silver, and could be just the spark the Reds need to rise up against the oppressive Silvers. The king and queen quickly cover up Mare’s anomaly by presenting her to the rest of the Silvers as a long-lost princess and betroth her to their second-born son. Now Mare is torn between playing the part of a Silver, and helping out the Scarlet Guard rebellion. The story has touches of the usual dystopian suspects. However, it’s formulaic elements are far outweighed by the breakneck pace and engaging characters. There’s a bit of teen romance, but luckily the characters are self-aware enough to realize its frivolity among the story’s more important plot points. A solid debut from Aveyard and a welcome addition to the plethora of speculative teen lit.—Kimberly Castle-Alberts, Hudson Library & Historical Society, OH

Review

“A sizzling, imaginative thriller, where romance and revolution collide, where power and justice duel. It’s exhilarating. Compelling. Action-packed. Unputdownable.” (USA Today)

“Aveyard weaves a compelling new world of action-packed surprises… inventive, character-driven.” (Kirkus)

“A volatile world with a dynamic heroine.” (Booklist)

“Breakneck pace and engaging characters.” (School Library Journal)

“ [Aveyard] sets her audience up for a gaspworthy twist that reconfigures nearly every character’s role and leaves Mare with no one to trust but herself… This blend of fantasy and dystopia will be an unexpected and worthy addition to many genre fans’ reading list.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

“Fascinating world building… Readers will be intrigued by a world that reflects today’s troubling issues concerning ethnic inequality, unfair distribution of wealth, pollution, warfare, political corruption, and the frightening power of the media.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))

Mare Barrow is a Red. In Norta, this means that she’s a normal human being, poor, and needs to scrape a living for herself and her family through thieving and general servitude. Reds are seen as the lowest of the low by Silvers, who have magical abilities that are highly esteeemed in the country. Mare and her family and friends despise Silvers, who treat Reds like dirt and have Reds fight an unending war with a neighboring country for them.

When circumstances for Mare send her right into the path of royals, she ends up discovering that she has magic abilities – and thus, is made a noble who is set to marry the second of two princes so that the reigning royal family can keep an eye on her. Meanwhile, an uprising is gathering through the country, and Mare has to figure out who she is and where her loyalties lie.

This one was hard to review because on one hand, I found the story very compelling, but on the other hand, there were lots of little things that I just couldn’t get into. I’ve broken them down below.

Things That Frustrated Me:

The heroine: my biggest frustration with this book was the lack of character development in Mare. I didn’t feel like I went on a journey with her as a character at all – she was kind of sassy and funny, and she clearly had some cool abilities…but that was it for me. I didn’t feel like I knew her at all by the end of the book because she was the same person the entire way through. That was hard for me to connect with.

The romance: There were (count ’em) THREE love interests for Mare in this book. None of them really go anywhere big, but it just felt like every friggin guy in the book was into her.
I’ve read this book last year, as soon as it popped up on Edelweiss, and honestly, it was one of the best books I’ve read in 2014. As I sit here today, trying to wrap my mind around its sheer awesomeness and put together a somewhat coherent review, I get ridiculously excited all over again, just thinking about the plot, the complex word-building, the insane plot twists and just how visually stunning and breathtakingly magnificent the whole story was. I really, truly loved Red Queen!

I’ve been putting off writing my review. I didn’t trust myself not go on an embarrassingly childish rave fest. And here I am, nearly half a year later, still under Red Queen’s magical spell. What can you do? Some books are just THAT awesome.

The one at the center of it all is Mare Barrow, an unimportant little Red. Mare lives in a world divided by blood, in which the Silver-blooded Royals hold all the power (both literally and metaphorically speaking) and the Red-bloods are nothing more than poor, lowly servants. The Silvers have supernatural powers, the Reds do not. At least that’s how it’s always been and what the Silvers want everyone to believe. When Mare discovers she has an ability of her own, her entire world gets flipped upside down. She finds herself thrown in the middle of intrigue-fueled Silver court, forced to play the role of a long lost Silver princess and betrothed to Silver King’s song. With the Scarlet Guard becoming more and more aggressive, the full-on rebellion is fast approaching. The fate of the entire kingdom depends on the choices she’ll make. And one bad decision can lead to a massacre…

Red Queen is a fast paced, breathless kind of read. A true edge-of-your-seat story. Intrigue filled, action packed, twisty and highly dramatic, it’s a real page turner.
This book starts out rather derivative, with shades of Hunger Games, Red Rising and a bunch of other stuff while at first seeming like a pure fantasy genre book, based on the special powers of the Silvers, but deeper in it hints at dystopian future or parallel universe kind of stuff.

There are two classes in this world. Our main character, Mare, is a red, the lower class. They have red blood and no special powers. The other, higher class, which takes great pains to suppress the reds, are the silvers. They have silver blood and they have a variety of different powers (but one each) and at one point it’s mentioned that they can only draw from what is around them (like if they can channel the power of water, there actually has to be water around) although, then again, one girl with water power (or hydra power, something like that) draws water just out of the air around her. Enough water to defeat a guy with the power of fire. So, I dunno. But anyway, by accident Mare (and all the royal type silvers) finds out she has a great power herself, even though she’s not supposed to since she bleeds red and all, and it gets very complicated where the king and queen (although the king is hardly a character at all in the book, very 2 dimensional) deciding it would be best if they tell everyone Mare is a long lost silver and they betroth her to their younger son. It really doesn’t make sense if you think too hard about it.

Reading this book I was going a bit nuts because there are a lot of inconsistencies, things that don’t make sense with the world in general and characters that seem to be one way and then flip flop to become another way.

Numenera Corebook – August 14, 2013

Numenera Corebook Hardcover – August 14, 2013
Author: Monte Cook ID: 1939979005

MCG001 Numenera Core Book RPG Monte Cook Games

Numenera is a science fantasy roleplaying game set in the far distant future. Humanity lives amid the remnants of eight great civilizations that have risen and fallen on Earth. These are the people of the Ninth World. This new world is filled with remnants of all the former worlds: bits of nanotechnology, the dataweb threaded among still-orbiting satellites, bio-engineered creatures, and myriad strange and wondrous devices. These remnants have become known as the numenera.

Player characters explore this world of mystery and danger to find these leftover artifacts of the past, not to dwell upon the old ways, but to help forge their new destinies, utilizing the so-called magic of the past to create a promising future.

Hardcover: 416 pagesPublisher: Monte Cook Games; 1st edition (August 14, 2013)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1939979005ISBN-13: 978-1939979001 Product Dimensions: 8.6 x 1 x 11.1 inches Shipping Weight: 3.4 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #114,102 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #8 in Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Gaming > Other Role-Playing Games #10176 in Books > Teens
The Numenera Core Book is part rulebook, part campaign guide. This is a game system that’s intertwined with its setting, not just a set of rules that includes an example of how they can be used. The rules are unobtrusive, though, so I have no doubt that a group that wanted to use them for a different game could do so.

That said, I’m not sure why you wouldn’t want to try this new setting. There are already rules out there for almost any game; this is how to play in the Ninth World, the science-fantasy world of Numenera. The scope is massive, the drama is intimate, and the wonder is overwhelming. There’s something special about the Ninth World that has the potential to be an incredible game for your group, and the Numenera book includes enough detail on it to go as deep as you are willing.

As for rules, instead of consulting the rules to see how performing this action is different from another, you learn a basic way of resolving every decision. The rest of your attention can be on your character, instead of your character sheet.

That sounds like what a lot of people are looking for. But it’s not a perfect fit each time. It’s a lot of "RP," but for my taste it’s a little light on the "G." Here are some rules that stood out:

1) Your stats are your resources. As you perform physical stunts, your physical stat (Might) drops, and you become exhausted or drained. A long con lying to a raider prince is stressful and takes its toll on the mental stat (Intellect) that you used to deceive him.

This also includes taking damage. You have no traditional hit point total that’s only used when tracking damage; the same Might score you use to hit with a sword is reduced when someone hits you!

I love this.
I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs for over two decades, and this is perhaps the most well-designed game I’ve ever encountered. The system is simple but very elegant, and allows the GM ("game master") to focus on the most important part of his role: to craft an interesting story. The GM doesn’t need to keep track of complex blocks of statistics for monsters and NPCs, and never even has to roll a die. Basically, if you think the most important part of "roleplaying game" is the roleplaying part, Numenera’s "Cypher" system does a great job of doing what it needs to do while staying out of your way. I really hope the game developer publishes a book that allows the use of this system in other settings.

Speaking of the setting, it’s also rather impressive. The Ninth World setting is earth, but one billion years in the future. Eight major civilizations (not all of them human) have risen and fallen, leaving behind artifacts of such advanced technology that the current medieval civilization views them as magic. The entire game is based on Arthur C. Clarke’s often-quoted statement "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic", and books like Gene Wolfe’s Books of the New Sun series are heavy influences. It’s certainly a refreshing twist on the standard high fantasy setting.

Finally, the book itself is well-designed and written. While a few typos are to be expected of any book of sufficient length, Numenera has remarkably few, and those few are minor and don’t detract from the quality of the book in the slightest. I’ve seen game books released for established and popular games by large game companies that have many more (and more significant) errors.
Monte Cook’s Numenera, Kickstarted in August 2012, is a delight to look at, to read, and to run. It is filled to the brim with gorgeous color art by a variety of artists. Its chapters, especially those sections relating to the setting, are written in a variety of voices, the reasons for which are explained in the "Living in the Ninth World" episode of the Transmissions From the Ninth World podcast. The rules, which Monte calls the Cypher System, are lightweight and designed to get out of the way in the interest of telling an awesome story and having fun with the players. Tasks are rated on a difficulty of 1-10; target number is three times the difficulty on a d20. Skills, assets, and effort can all reduce the difficulty of any given roll.

Character creation is a sentence: I am a ________ (descriptor) ________ (type) who ________ (focus). The descriptor tells you something about how your character interacts with the world, be they learned, rugged, stealthy, or one of many other options. Your type is what you are: glaive (the warrior), nano (the mage), or jack (of all trades). Your focus is what you do. This adds special abilities to your character and can be elemental- (Bears a Halo of Fire), talent- (Masters Weaponry), or activity- (Explores Dark Places) based — or something else entirely (Fuses Flesh and Steel). All told, there are more than 1,000 ways to customize your character between those three choices.

The setting is Earth in a billion-with-a-b years. Civilization, such as it is, is built upon the ruins of eight unimaginably powerful empires who mastered technologies we can’t begin to fathom (see type 5+ of the Kardashev Scale).

Author: Elaine Gloria Gottschall ID: 0969276818

Breaking the Vicious Cycle was written by Elaine Gottschall, biochemist and cell biologist. It provides an alternative way to help combat digestive disorders using dietary changes; and also a practical book that addresses the problems of intestinal conditions such as: Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Diverticulitis, Celiac Disease as well as less severe complaints like: indigestion, “nervous stomach”, chronic diarrhea & spastic colon.

Paperback: 205 pagesPublisher: The Kirkton Press (August 1994)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0969276818ISBN-13: 978-0969276814 Product Dimensions: 0.5 x 6 x 9 inches Shipping Weight: 12.8 ounces (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #1,935 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #48 in Books > Health, Fitness & Dieting > Diets & Weight Loss > Other Diets #64 in Books > Cookbooks, Food & Wine > Special Diet
2 years ago, I was suffering from nightly fevers, night sweats, diarrhea 5-8 times a day, pain and cramping, and would black out every time I stood up and had to rest when walking to the back yard. I was taking the highest dose of Colozal possible, and had lost 30 pounds in one month. I decided to start Remicade, which stopped the diarrhea for a week, and then I would regress. 3 rounds of Remicade were providing relief for 7-10 days after each one, and my doctor was suggesting 6 MP or Imuran, even though I had had a near-fatal reaction to it many years ago.

I decided to try the SCDiet again, which I had tried 8 years before with great results, but hadn’t continued when I became pregnant, and had misplaced the book in a move. When I began the diet this time, my fevers stopped in a day! I continued to take Remicade, and followed the diet, though I suffered continuous ups and downs for the first 6 months, and my diet was very limited, since I couldn’t tolerate most fruits, most vegetables, the nut flour, or the yogurt for the first 3 months.

I gained back the 30 pounds in a few months, despite the rocky progress, my anemia slowly corrected itself, and I started having energy again for the first time in years. I continued on the Remicade, though by now, I was able to stretch my infusions out to 8 weeks, then 10, but still would relapse towards the last weeks.

A year into the diet, I found out that I had a stricture in my descending colon and sigmoid colon that was the size of a pencil. In July, 2004 I had surgery to remove the stricture, and continued on with SCD in the hospital and afterwards. Recovery was fairly easy, and the doctors were amazed at my speedy progress. I discontinued Remicade, since it was unnecessary with the stricture gone.
How can I find words to describe the miracle that is this diet? Following it has given me back my son in a way I never dreamed possible. Elaine’s diet has cured my son’s autism and his three year struggle with GI troubles.
My son Colin, age 4 ½ , has struggled with GI troubles since 11 months old. He had the ROTAvirus, chronic diarrhea, and was constantly on steroids (for asthma) and antibiotics (for ear and lung infections). By age two-and-a-half he was having night terrors every night. By age three, he was labeled "failure to thrive" due to his low weight and height. He was also diagnosed as having developmental delays (Pervasive Development Disorder, ie Autism). He was behind in speech and motor skills…he banged his head and stopped looking at me. My son slipped away from me!
Everyone had answers for us…the mainstream doctors (neurologists) wanted to give him drugs. The GI doctors thought Colin had "autistic" diarrhea and wouldn’t help us. They wouldn’t even do a colonoscopy on a child who had struggled with a GI disorder for years.
The alternative doctors told us to cut out gluten and milk and use high dosages of vitamins. Stopping gluten stopped his night terrors–but his chronic diarrhea and delays continued. In fact, as I became a "gluten-free" cook and branched out to new starches, Colin’s symptoms got worse.
When my son was labeled as having "high functioning autism" at age 3 1/2, God told me to "put Colin first." So I quit my job to save my son. I decided that instead of listening to "experts" in autism, I would listen to my son. I knew he had the answers inside him so I studied him.
I always knew Colin had a problem with food.

Series: First Aid UsmlePaperback: 784 pagesPublisher: McGraw-Hill Education / Medical; 3 edition (February 14, 2012)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0071744029ISBN-13: 978-0071744027 Product Dimensions: 7.9 x 1.2 x 11.6 inches Shipping Weight: 3 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #17,116 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #66 in Books > Textbooks > Medicine & Health Sciences > Test Preparation & Review #70 in Books > Education & Teaching > Higher & Continuing Education > Test Preparation > Professional > Medical #439 in Books > Medical Books > Medicine

I bought the kindle version because it’s $10 cheaper, and it works better than I expected. For every question there is a link that brings you directly to its answer, and for every answer there’s the link to bring you back to the question. That’s easier than flipping the paper books. Not to mention that the questions themselves are excellent companions to the FA book.

This is an excellent review source of the USMLE Step 1. The book is well organized, concise, and to the point. There are no gimmicks with this book. Its questions, organized by subject, with detailed answer keys.

I purchased the Kindle edition because it was cheaper and I could begin using it immediately. As a first year medical student I have been using these questions to help prepare me for exams and they provide great explanations and information about each question. I can’t review on how well it would prepare me for the USMLE because I am not studying for that at this point, though the questions seem to be board-style to me. The kindle edition is great for quizzing because it is easy to get from question to answer with just a single click. My only problem with this book, and it may just be the electronic edition, is that the images are in black and white (the only reason I gave it a 4). There are some histology images that should have been in color and they have hindered my ability to answer the questions. Other than that I think this was worth the purchase.
